Orava at the Utzon Room

  • Sydney Opera House (map)

Sunday February 18, 2018 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House

Join award-winning Brisbane-based Orava Quartet for a journey into the soul of Russia featuring the music of Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.

The bright future of Australian chamber music is here

Right from the start the Orava Quartet have set an impeccably high standard. The four young men from Brisbane – brothers Daniel and Karol Kowalik, Thomas Chawner and David Dalseno – quickly established an international reputation which has taken them from Australia to the world. After a residency at the University of Colorado, Orava took two prizes at the Asia Pacific Chamber Music Competition. Since then, the Brisbane-based group has been dazzling audiences everywhere, and has signed a recording deal with Universal Music Australia.

Many quartets boast youthful vigour; Orava combines a no-hold-barred approach with immense finesse. This means they can do justice to lyricism of Tchaikovsky’s first quartet, the turbulent emotion of the Rachmaninoff, with the mature gravity of Shostakovich’s Eighth. Join Orava for a journey into the soul of Russia.

Presented by Sydney Opera House.
